Two local runners — both from Huntsville — lined up for the F70-74 age group on a mild December morning, 59°F with a light breeze and overcast skies. It was a small but spirited field, and Lisa Harris made the most of it.

Harris, 70, set a clear pace from the start and never let up, crossing in 1:24:05 at a steady 13:32 per mile. That's a composed, controlled effort over 6.2 miles — no small thing at any age, let alone in the 70-plus bracket. Mary Moran, 71, followed her across the line in 1:32:34, running 14:54 per mile. Moran's finish was every bit as committed; she simply couldn't close the gap that Harris had opened.

The 8:29 margin between them tells the story plainly: Harris was the stronger runner on the day, and she earned the top spot in the F70-74 age group outright. Both women should take real pride in toeing the line at a December marathon weekend race — and finishing it.
