Rocket City 5K — F15-19: Fletcher runs away with it

• Kaylie Fletcher won the F15-19 age group in 33:04 (10:39/mi), finishing 4:00 ahead of second place — the largest gap on the podium.
• Grace Van Der Wel and Kirkleigh Sweetman staged the closest battle of the day, separated by just 16 seconds (37:04 vs. 37:20).
• Six finishers ranged from age 15 to 19, with both 15-year-olds — Lyla Farrier and Katie Simmons — placing 4th and 6th respectively.

Kaylie Fletcher, 17, from Ethel, Louisiana, made the trip to Huntsville count. Running at 10:39 per mile in warm, breezy conditions — 70°F with a 17 mph wind and thick humidity — she crossed in 33:04 and never looked back. Her four-minute cushion over the rest of the field wasn't a close call; it was a statement.

Behind her, Grace Van Der Wel and Kirkleigh Sweetman fought out the most compelling duel of the race. Van Der Wel, also 17, edged the 19-year-old Sweetman by 16 seconds to claim second, running 37:04 to Sweetman's 37:20. Both were locked in around 11:56–12:01 per mile — essentially identical paces — making that gap feel hard-earned over every step of the 5K.

Lyla Farrier, 15, came home 4th in 44:07, while Raegan Stuckey rounded out the top five in 48:08. Katie Simmons, also 15, completed the F15-19 field in 58:55 — gutting out a tough day on a course that offered no shelter from the wind. All six finishers crossed the line, and that counts for plenty on a morning like this one.
