Rocket City 5K — F65-69: Hoffman Outruns the Wind from Kentucky

• Barb Hoffman won the F65-69 age group in 39:06 (12:35/mi), clearing runner-up Bonnie Miller by 1 minute 40 seconds.

Barb Hoffman made the trip from Cold Spring, Kentucky worth every mile. Running a 12:35/mi clip, she was the class of the F65-69 field from the gun, building a gap that Bonnie Miller — racing on home soil in Madison — could never quite close. Miller's 13:07/mi pace was solid and earned her a comfortable second, but Hoffman's lead was never seriously threatened.

Behind the top two, the race took a long pause before the rest of the field arrived — nearly 17 minutes separating Miller's finish from the cluster that followed. When that cluster did come in, it was genuinely tight. Cindy Moeller of Madison crossed in 57:21 to claim third, with Paula Pendergast (Rochester, MN) just 48 seconds back in fourth at 58:09, and Linda Evans of Muscle Shoals rounding out the five in 58:32. Less than 72 seconds covered all three of them.

Five women lined up and five women finished — a clean sweep for the F65-69 group on a warm, blustery December day in Huntsville. Hoffman's victory was the decisive story, but the scrappy battle for bronze gave the age group a genuine subplot worth savoring.
