Rocket City 5K: Gage Gross edges out a tight M30-34 finish

• Gross wins in 24:03 (7:44/mi), holding off Tyler Arnold by just 7 seconds.

• Benjamin England rounded out the pack at 26:26, with Bob Farris another 1:37 back in 5th.

Gage Gross of Madison, AL took the M30-34 title on a warm, blustery December morning — 70°F with 17 mph winds and humidity pushing 76% made for conditions that had no business feeling like December in Alabama. Running 7:44/mi, Gross crossed in 24:03 and had just enough to keep Tyler Arnold of Pisgah at bay.

Arnold was the closest of challengers, finishing in 24:10 — seven seconds off the win, running 7:47/mi. Gabriel Lopez of Madison made it a genuine three-man race at the front, coming in at 24:38 (7:56/mi) to claim 3rd. Those 35 seconds spanning the top three made for the most compelling subplot of the M30-34 race, with any one of them capable of reshuffling the podium on a different day.

Behind them, Benjamin England of Huntsville ran 8:30/mi to finish 4th in 26:26, and Bob Farris of Rockton, IL — the group's oldest at 34 — came in 5th at 28:03. Josh Sams of Dallas, GA completed the six-man field in 44:19, finishing well off the pace of the front five at 14:16/mi.
