Rocket City 5K: Braun dominates the M40-44 field

• Christopher Braun won M40-44 in 20:45 (6:41/mi), finishing more than 2 minutes 22 seconds clear of the field.
• Jason Worley and Josh Cauthon battled for the podium, separated by just 23 seconds at 23:07 and 23:30.
• The M40-44 group spanned a wide range: from Braun's 6:41/mi to A.J. Stark's 17:53/mi across all 16 finishers.
• All 16 men finished on a warm, breezy December day — 70°F with 17 mph winds and humidity at 76%, conditions that made every second harder to come by.

Christopher Braun made it look like a different race. The 44-year-old from Saint Louis ran 6:41 per mile to clock 20:45, a margin so commanding that second place Jason Worley (23:07) would have needed to run nearly 45 seconds per mile faster just to close the gap. In a 5K, that's not a close race — that's a statement.

Behind Braun, the real contest was for the podium's lower steps. Worley, 43, from Roanoke, held off Josh Cauthon of Prairie Village by 23 seconds, both men running in the 7:26–7:34/mi range. David Drebsky came in fourth at 25:08 (8:05/mi), leaving a gap of nearly a minute and a half back to Worley — so while the top three were reasonably tight relative to the rest of the field, second place was never seriously in danger once Worley found his rhythm.

The middle of the M40-44 pack saw a cluster of finishers between 26 and 34 minutes, with Markneil Arias (26:34), Will Trautman (28:48), and Royce Harris (29:54) rounding out the top seven. The back half of the field spread considerably, with Jacob Goudeau and A.J. Stark finishing at 50:05 and 55:34 respectively — a reminder that on a humid, windy morning in Huntsville, simply getting to the finish line is its own achievement.
