Only two women lined up in the F75-79 age group on a December morning that felt nothing like winter — 70 degrees, thick humidity, and a stiff 17 mph wind made sure of that. Conditions that would give pause to runners half their age.

Doris Brown, representing Cookeville, Tennessee, handled it in stride. Her 43:18 finish at a 13:56-per-mile pace was a composed, controlled effort that put nearly 15 minutes of daylight between herself and the field. In a two-person race, that margin isn't a close call — it's a statement.

Sandra McAnally, racing on home turf in Huntsville, crossed in 58:10. Completing a 5K at 75 years old in blustery, unseasonably warm weather is its own achievement, and McAnally did exactly that. The 14:52 gap to Brown reflects two very different paces on the day, but both women finished, and that's what counts when the wind is pushing back.
