Rocket City 5K — M55-59: Childress edges Hester in a four-second thriller

• Mark Hester (59, Jasper, AL) finished 2nd in 27:31 — the closest margin anywhere on the M55-59 podium.
• Keith White (57, Huntsville, AL) rounded out the podium in 3rd at 28:14, 47 seconds back of Hester.
• 19 men finished the M55-59 race, spread across a range of nearly 34 minutes from first to last.

Ronald Childress and Mark Hester turned the M55-59 race into a genuine duel. Childress crossed in 27:27 — 8:50 per mile on a warm, breezy December morning in Huntsville, 70°F with a 17 mph wind that made the effort feel heavier than the calendar suggested. Hester, a year older at 59, gave him everything he had, finishing just four seconds behind at 27:31. Four seconds over 3.1 miles is a razor-thin margin, and Hester earned every bit of that 2nd-place finish.

Keith White (3rd, 28:14) kept it honest at the front, staying within 47 seconds of Hester and giving the top of the M55-59 field a clean, competitive shape. Behind him, Ernie Norris (4th, 29:37) and Jimmy Watson (5th, 30:53) filled out a top five where every finisher broke 31 minutes — a solid cluster given the conditions.

The field spread out considerably from there. Timothy Smith (6th, 31:42) through Alan Clemons (10th, 37:26) formed a mid-pack band, while the back half of the group ranged from Manny Casals at 42:55 all the way to Gerald Nidiffer, who closed out the M55-59 finishers in 1:01:30. Every one of those 19 men toed the line and got it done — but the story of this race belongs to Childress and Hester, who made the front of the M55-59 field worth watching until the very last step.
