Rocket City 5K: Ingham dominates F45-49 with a 23:53 wire-to-wire win

• Kelly Ingham won the F45-49 age group in 23:53 (7:41/mi) — more than 2 minutes ahead of runner-up Shelly Ambrose (26:00).
• The podium spread across just over 5 minutes: Ingham (23:53), Ambrose (26:00), Jenn Taylor (29:01).
• A tight cluster at the 6th–8th spots: Laura Koontz (35:09), Wendy Huskey (35:21), and Shawna Wentlandt (35:56) — all within 47 seconds of each other.
• 22 women finished in the F45-49 age group on a warm, breezy December morning — 70°F and 17 mph winds made every second count.

Kelly Ingham of Whitefish, MT came to Huntsville and made it look straightforward. Her 23:53 — a 7:41-per-mile clip — was simply in a different class from the rest of the F45-49 field. The gap to Shelly Ambrose of Bucyrus, KS (26:00, 8:22/mi) was a convincing 2:07, the kind of margin that speaks to a runner who was never truly challenged for the top spot.

Ambrose held second comfortably, nearly a full minute clear of Jenn Taylor of Salem, MA, who rounded out the podium in 29:01. Valerie Hughes (30:50) and Amanda Gallagher (32:32) filled out the top five, with Gallagher just inside the 10:30-per-mile range on a day when the warmth and wind were no small factor for a December race in Alabama.

The real drama played out in the 6th-through-8th battle, where Koontz, Huskey, and Wentlandt finished within less than a minute of one another. Further back, Heather Harrison (45:53) and Jeannie Sandlin (45:54) crossed just one second apart — a razor-thin gap for a race of this distance. Seventeen Taylor (Jeanne, 46:06) and Kathy Youngren (46:03) were similarly bunched, making the middle and back of the field a genuinely competitive stretch of racing despite the challenging conditions.
