F19 & Under: Eleven-Year-Old Vanessa Sainz Runs Away with It

Vanessa Sainz came to San Francisco and made it look easy. The 11-year-old from Oakley ran a brisk 8:52 per mile to finish in 27:32, crossing the line 3 minutes and 3 seconds ahead of 2nd place — a margin that speaks for itself in any field, let alone one of 63 competitors. On a breezy 60-degree morning with 15 mph winds off the bay, Sainz was simply in a different race from everyone else.

Behind her, the battle for 2nd and 3rd was genuinely compelling. Nora LeBlanc, 19, from Portland ran a steady 9:51/mi to claim the runner-up spot in 30:35. Anya Bogucharova — also 11, from Bellevue — pushed hard to finish 3rd in 30:45, just 10 seconds back. Two 11-year-olds on the podium, separated by over three minutes from each other but united in outrunning athletes nearly a decade older.

The middle of the field told its own story. Ishya Shankar (4th, 33:25) and Allison Hurley (5th, 34:14) were followed by a tight cluster of six runners — 6th through 11th — all finishing within 38 seconds of each other between 34:17 and 35:27. And the Subba sisters from San Carlos — Numa and Hana — ran the whole 5K together, finishing 15th and 16th with just one second between them.

Perhaps the most eye-catching result deep in the results: Alexandra Captain, just 8 years old from Moraga, finished 20th in 37:17 at 12:00/mi. Running a 5K at age 8, in a field this size, on the streets of San Francisco — that's worth noting on its own terms.
