Two eleven-year-olds from Berkeley showed up to run the San Francisco streets, and Colin MacDonald made it count. Running a 13:28/mi pace across the 5K course — in 60°F conditions with a 15 mph wind off the Bay — MacDonald crossed the line in 41:51 to claim the top spot in the 19 & Under field outright.

Nathaniel Wollam, also 11 and also from Berkeley, came home second in 48:54, running a 15:44/mi pace. MacDonald's 13:28/mi was meaningfully quicker, and that gap built steadily into the 7:03 margin that separated them at the finish. Still, Wollam got to the line and earned his place on the result sheet — no small thing on a breezy San Francisco morning.

It's a small field of two, but the story is real: a pair of Berkeley fifth-graders racing the San Francisco Marathon 5K, with MacDonald taking the win. That's worth remembering.
