M45-49 Half Marathon: Carriglitto holds off a furious late charge

• Mike Carriglitto (age 49, Pottstown PA) won M45-49 in 1:24:07 at a 6:25/mi clip — nearly a full 30 seconds clear of second place.
• Andrew Jakubowitch and Randy Misencik finished 2nd and 3rd separated by just one second — 1:24:36 to 1:24:37 — in one of the tightest runner-up battles of the day.
• Matt Cross rounded out the top four in 1:25:44, leaving a 67-second gap between 4th and 5th — the biggest single step down on the leaderboard.
• 211 men finished in M45-49, with the top 20 all coming in under 7:40/mi in 71°F heat and 17 mph wind off the Virginia Beach coast.

Carriglitto was never seriously threatened once he settled in. His gender-place progression — moving from 66th among men at the first checkpoint all the way up to 54th by 20K — tells the story of a runner who got stronger as others wilted in the warm, humid conditions. He held that 54th spot through the finish, running the final stretch at a pace that produced the 46th-fastest 20K-to-finish split among all men in the race. In a field grinding through 71-degree heat with a stiff wind, that kind of late-race composure is what separates a winner from the pack.

Behind him, the battle for silver was decided by a single tick of the clock. Jakubowitch (1:24:36) and Misencik (1:24:37) ran essentially the same race — both averaging 6:27/mi — and both posted strong 10K-to-15K splits, ranking 52nd and 57th respectively among men on that segment. Jakubowitch had the better overall trajectory, climbing from 82nd at 5K all the way to 59th before a slight fade to 61st at the line. Misencik was more consistent through the middle miles but couldn't quite reel in his Dover rival when it mattered most.

Chris Lombardi (5th, 1:27:51) deserves a mention for posting the 76th-fastest 5K-to-10K men's split in the field — a strong early move that helped him separate from the broader M45-49 pack. The 2:44 gap between him and Cross in 4th, however, shows how decisively the top four formed their own tier on a tough weather day in Virginia Beach.
