San Francisco 10K (2023): Iznerowicz dominates the F25-29 field

Karolina Iznerowicz, 25, from Riverside, CA, turned in a performance that stood apart from everyone else in the F25-29 field. Her 39:37 at 6:23/mi was 3 minutes and 55 seconds ahead of runner-up Shamara Carney — a margin that tells its own story. On a cool, overcast San Francisco morning with 81% humidity and a light 7 mph wind off the bay, Iznerowicz ran a pace that none of her 517 competitors could answer.

Behind her, the race for the podium was genuinely compelling. Carney (43:32, 7:00/mi) held second, but Sally Zhao — a San Francisco local — closed the gap to 29 seconds at the finish (44:01, 7:05/mi). Zhao ran a faster pace than Carney, making up ground over the course, but Carney's earlier advantage held. Daniela Aguilar from Oxnard (44:16, 7:07/mi) finished 15 seconds further back in 4th, rounding out a tightly bunched chase pack.

The battle for 5th was the closest finish of the day in this field. Hilary Fitzsimmons (44:59, 7:14/mi) edged Christine Kwon (45:00, 7:15/mi) by a single second — Kwon, a San Francisco native, left it all on the Embarcadero but came up just short. Further down, the field remained competitive well into the 40s and 50s. Maple Lin (20th, 49:44) closed out the top 20 at 8:00/mi, with 498 more finishers behind her completing a 518-strong F25-29 field that made this one of the day's most populated races.
