M40-44 10K: Dinan edges Wills in a razor-thin battle at the front

John Dinan, 42, from Los Angeles, came to San Francisco and put on a clinic at the front of the M40-44 field, crossing in 39:09 at a 6:18/mi clip. Right on his heels was local Jonathan Wills, 44, from San Francisco itself — 39:16 at 6:19/mi. Those 7 seconds represent one of the tightest finishes of the day in the age group, and the pace difference between them was negligible; this was a race decided by who wanted it more over the final stretch, not by any dramatic separation in effort.

What made the top of this field remarkable was the gap that opened behind the front two. Grayson Hartman of Redding (42:19, 6:49/mi) ran a solid 3rd, but he was more than three minutes adrift of Wills — a chasm in a 10K. Andrew Smith (43:06) and John Zeegers (44:27) rounded out the top five, with Pramoda Vyasarao just 8 seconds behind Zeegers in 6th at 44:35.

Further back, the race produced its own quiet drama. Fanni and Nair staged the most compressed finish outside the top two, separated by a single second — 46:23 to 46:24 — for 9th and 10th respectively, with Xiao Ma just four seconds further back in 11th (46:28). Three men within five seconds across three places made for a genuine cluster battle in the middle of the 135-finisher field.

The conditions — 64°F, overcast, with modest wind — were about as cooperative as San Francisco gets in July, and the paces at the front reflected it. Dinan's winning 6:18/mi average was fast enough to match the women's overall race winner from 2022 (Kristi Williams, 39:08) almost to the second — a coincidence that underscores just how strong the M40-44 front-runners were on this course.
