M50-54: Ortega Runs Away With It in Fresno Heat

• Art James Ortega won the M50-54 group in 26:15 (8:27/mi), finishing 27 seconds clear of the field.

Art James Ortega, 51, from Fresno, set the tone early and never let up, crossing in 26:15 at an 8:27/mi clip to take the M50-54 title. On a warm November morning — 74°F and clear in Fresno — that kind of sustained pace was no small feat, and Ortega's margin of 27 seconds over Jorge Ruiz was comfortable enough to signal control from start to finish.

Behind him, Ruiz (52, Clovis) and Tyler Hedden (50, Clovis) waged the afternoon's closest fight. Both averaged 8:36/mi, and only two seconds separated them at the finish — Ruiz edging Hedden for 2nd. Juan Amador (53, Coalinga) rounded out the podium group in 4th at 28:05, running a 9:02/mi pace and finishing well clear of the rest of the field.

From 5th place onward, the M50-54 group spread out considerably. Jeff Clemmensen and David Szpor clocked 31:27 and 32:31 respectively, while the back half of the 16-man field ranged from John Reynolds' 34:20 through to Jason Smith's 1:00:34. Every one of those 16 men crossed the line, which is the only result that matters once the clock starts.
