Ken Neufeld, two years Cortez's senior at 82, came home in 46:54 — 15:06 per mile and 11 minutes 43 seconds behind. The gap was wide, but Neufeld covered the same Fresno streets on the same warm morning, and finishing is the whole point.

Two men, two very different paces, one age group. Cortez had the clearer day of it; Neufeld simply had the longer one.
