Katie Cannizzaro of Vestavia Hills ran a composed, relentless race. Holding 3rd among women from the 10K checkpoint all the way to the finish line, she never wavered — and then turned the screws on the back half, posting the 4th-fastest women's closing split in the field at 6:47/mi average. On a mild but breezy December day in Huntsville, that kind of sustained pace in the 40-44 age group is something to notice.

Michelle Ziegler made her own move in the second half, climbing from 5th to 4th among women after the 10K and logging the 5th-fastest women's closing split in the field. She finished 1:38 behind Cannizzaro — close enough to be a real race for second, but never quite close enough to threaten the top spot. The Boone, NC runner was clearly strongest where it counted most.

The battle for 3rd was the group's most dramatic subplot. Laurel Beversdorf of Huntsville held 12th among women at the finish, while Jennifer Hom of Atlanta slipped from 12th to 13th in the women's field over that same closing segment — a 31-second gap that tells the story neatly. Beversdorf's 13th-fastest women's closing split edged out Hom's 17th-fastest to decide the bronze.

Amanda Warriner rounded out the top five at 1:48:34, a steady 8:17/mi that held 17th among women wire to wire. With 40 finishers spread across a 52-minute window from first to 20th place, the F40-44 group at Rocket City 2024 was as deep as it was competitive at the front.
