Rocket City Half Marathon — F45-49: Butler dominates from wire to wire

• Melissa Butler won the F45-49 age group in 1:36:29 (7:22/mi), finishing 7th among all women — a margin of nearly 20 minutes over runner-up Michelle Greenlee.
• Greenlee closed hard, posting the 32nd-fastest women's split on the 10K-to-Finish stretch and climbing from 36th to 30th among women over that final segment.
• Pamela Miller and Kellie Gregory were separated by just 10 seconds (2:04:47 vs. 2:04:57) for the final podium spot — Miller held on for 3rd after Gregory faded from 42nd to 57th among women in the back half.
• Three Madison, AL runners — Alison Fields, Michele Chalmers, and Ellen Brooks — all crossed in 2:45:05, filling 12th through 14th.

Melissa Butler made the F45-49 race her own from start to finish. Running 7:22 per mile across 13.1 miles in Huntsville's mild but breezy December conditions, the Dayton, Ohio 49-year-old held 7th among all women at the 10K checkpoint and never budged from it — a sign of a race executed with precision rather than luck. Her 9th-fastest women's split on the 10K-to-Finish segment confirmed she didn't just coast to the tape either.

Behind her, Michelle Greenlee of Cullman put together the most notable closing stretch in the age group. She picked up six places among women over the final segment, finishing in 1:56:21 to claim a clear 2nd. The real drama came one spot lower: Pamela Miller of Sterrett and Kellie Gregory of McDonough, Georgia ran nearly identical races until the closing miles, when Gregory slipped from 42nd to 57th among women while Miller moved the other direction — gaining 11 places to seal 3rd in 2:04:47.

The back half of the field had its own story. Joyce Weber, Amy Wood, and Laura Koontz ran in tight formation between 2:15:50 and 2:21:02 for 6th through 8th. Then came the race's most striking cluster: Fields, Chalmers, and Brooks — all from Madison — recorded the identical displayed time of 2:45:05, filling three consecutive spots. Timing settled the order, but the three neighbors finished as close as the clock could show.
