Rocket City Half Marathon M40-44: Schmidt Dominates in Canton-to-Huntsville Thriller

• Justin Schmidt won the M40-44 group in 1:23:43 (6:23/mi), finishing more than 3:46 ahead of runner-up Tom Barnard.
• The podium was tight from 2nd through 4th: Barnard (1:27:29), Erik Debolt (1:28:11), and Joshua Swain (1:28:42) were separated by just 1:13.
• Debolt made the most visible move of the closing stretch, climbing from 12th to 9th among men on the 10K→Finish leg with the 8th-fastest split on that segment in the men's field.
• Christopher Lane and Colt Davis both clocked 1:59:01, but the timing chip separated them — Lane took 15th, Davis 16th.

Justin Schmidt was simply in a different race. The 43-year-old from Canton, Georgia, ran 6:23 per mile across 13.1 miles on a mild but breezy December morning in Huntsville, building from 6th to 5th among men overall and posting the 6th-fastest 10K-to-finish split in the men's field. No one in the M40-44 group came close to challenging him — his margin over Barnard was nearly four minutes, which in a half marathon is a statement, not a gap.

Behind Schmidt, the race for the podium was genuinely compelling. Tom Barnard, the Madison local running 6:40/mi, held his position steadily through the second half. Erik Debolt of Huntsville was the mover, gaining three spots among men on the back half of the course to claim 3rd at 1:28:11. Joshua Swain rounded out the top four at 1:28:42 — just 31 seconds back of Debolt — making positions 2 through 4 a genuine contest that wasn't settled until the finish line.

The middle of the field showed a notable cluster around the 1:59 mark. Lane, Davis, and Carlos Olivares all finished within eight seconds of each other, with Olivares (1:59:09) just eight ticks behind the pair ahead of him. Jermaine Wade's 5th-place finish at 1:33:13 left a sizeable gap to Brad Cupp in 6th at 1:34:00, and the field spread considerably from there, with the top 10 spanning nearly 19 minutes from Schmidt's winning time to Kenny Bird's 1:42:19.
