Kurt Lenser made the M65-69 age group his own from the gun. The 66-year-old from Franklin, TN, crossed in 1:40:20 at a 7:39/mi clip — a pace that would be brisk in any age group, and in this one it was simply untouchable. His margin over second place was 27 minutes and 49 seconds, which says everything about how this race played out at the front.

Behind Lenser, the real competition was the fight for 2nd. John West of Livingston, TN, held that spot in 2:08:09, running 9:47/mi, while Edward Russell of Lebanon, TN, pushed him all the way to the line in 2:13:27. West had the stronger closing half — he moved up four spots among the men from 10K to the finish — while Russell actually clawed back four places of his own over that same stretch, making it a genuine late-race duel even if the gap at the tape was five minutes and eighteen seconds.

The most nail-biting subplot came at the back of the M65-69 field, where Tim McCune (68, Springville, AL) and Ekkehard Bonatz (69, Hoover, AL) ran the final stretch in near-lockstep. McCune finished 4th in 2:28:06; Bonatz closed in 2:29:35 — just 89 seconds apart after 13.1 miles. Bonatz, the eldest of the five at 69, actually entered the closing segment one place ahead of McCune in the overall men's standings before McCune edged past him to seal 4th. Five finishers, five Tennesseans and Alabamians, and a clean sweep of the podium for the 65-and-over crowd on a cool, overcast Huntsville morning.
