On a cool, clear St. Patrick's Day weekend morning in West Sacramento, 47 girls 12 and under took on the Shamrock'n 5K, and Sacramento's Emilia Machado made her presence felt from the jump. Her 22:33 finish — 7:16 per mile — was the class of the field, and the 34-second gap she built over Rocklin's Olivia Warta (23:07, 7:27/mi) reflected a real difference in pace, not a photo-finish separation.

Warta held 2nd comfortably, running 20 seconds clear of West Sacramento's own Maddison Orr, who crossed in 23:54 at a 7:42/mi clip to complete the podium. Just off the medals, Sacramento's Bailey Quok turned in one of the most impressive performances of the day: at only 8 years old, she ran 24:16 — a 7:49/mi average — to finish 4th, ahead of three 12-year-olds. That kind of performance from a second-grader deserves its own moment.

Further back, the race delivered one of its sharpest storylines at 8th and 9th place. Sacramento's Marylou O'Neill (11) and Iris Drewes (11) arrived at the finish line in what the clock read as an identical 28:43 — but timing to the hundredths told the real story: O'Neill in 28:43.22, Drewes in 28:43.86, separated by just 0.64 of a second. Juliette Cardenas, just 6 years old, crossed in 28:59 to claim 10th — another reminder that this age group had no shortage of gutsy, young competitors. The field stretched all the way to 47 finishers, with the top 20 all coming in under 35 minutes.
