Shamrock'n 5K M45-49: Knight edges Puffer in a blistering battle at the front

Jason Knight made it look like a track race. The 46-year-old from San Anselmo crossed in 19:50 — a 6:23/mi average across the full 5K — to claim the M45-49 title on a cool, clear March morning in West Sacramento. Right on his heels was Justin Puffer of Roseville, who ran 6:25/mi and finished in 19:54. Four seconds separated them at the line, and neither man gave an inch; that's as tight a 1-2 finish as you'll find in a 72-man age group field.

Nevin Yeates of Sacramento rounded out the podium in 21:03, running 6:47/mi to finish a comfortable 69 seconds behind the top two. The gap from Yeates to 4th was substantial: Daniel Standring (Rancho Cordova) came home 4th in 22:29 at 7:14/mi, followed by Dennis Sanchez (Rocklin) in 5th at 23:08. Those two spots mark where the front pack truly ended and the broader field began.

The middle of the group saw a cluster of competitive racing from 6th through 8th — Tadael Emiru (Elk Grove, 23:19), Gilbert Avina (San Francisco, 23:54), and Christopher Momanyi (Roseville, 24:02) — all finishing within 43 seconds of each other. Brady Gordon (Sacramento) was 9th in 24:58, and Al Macias (Plumas Lake) rounded out the top ten in 25:58, the last man under 26 minutes. With 52 more finishers beyond the top 20, the M45-49 group proved one of the day's deeper age groups — but the story at the top belongs to Knight and Puffer, separated by nothing but a four-second sprint to the finish.
