William Vella of Elk Grove came out and simply ran away from the M60-64 field. His 22:42 finish — clicking off miles at 7:18 pace — left a gap of 2:10 to the next man across the line. At 61 years old, that kind of margin in a 39-man age group is not a close race; it's a statement.

Behind him, the battle for silver and bronze was a different story entirely. Rocklin's Rusty Sanner held second at 24:52, running 8:00/mi, while Citrus Heights' Jeff Lawley came in at 24:59 — a 7-second gap after 3.1 miles of racing. Lawley's 8:03/mi pace was slightly slower than Sanner's, meaning Sanner held his edge throughout rather than being run down at the finish. Close, but not a catch-up — Sanner earned it. Reginald Daniels of Rancho Cordova secured fourth in 25:59, completing a tight front pack of four men all under 26 minutes.

The field spread out considerably from there. Todd Vlaanderen crossed in 28:45 (9:15/mi) in fifth, with Glen Peach (30:07), Tim Jones (30:16), and Brad Meyer (30:33) forming a cluster through 6th, 7th, and 8th — all within 26 seconds of each other.
