M13-15: Carson Peters Owns the Shamrock'n 5K

Carson Peters made this one look straightforward. The 15-year-old from West Sacramento crossed in 19:13 — running 6:11 per mile through the morning chill — and put 1:04 between himself and the entire rest of the M13-15 field. In a 31-finisher age group, that kind of gap doesn't happen by accident; Peters ran away from the competition and never looked back.

Behind him, the race for 2nd and 3rd was a genuine contest. Keller Douglas (14) held 2nd at 20:17 with a 6:32/mi effort, while Jovany Luna (15) pressed him at 20:38, running 6:39/mi. The 21 seconds between them is real daylight, but both ran well clear of 4th. Speaking of 4th — William Cromwell deserves a mention. The 13-year-old from Sacramento ran a 6:42/mi average to finish in 20:49, mixing it with athletes two years his senior and coming within 11 seconds of the podium.

Sawyer Griffin (5th, 21:51) was the last finisher under 22 minutes, running 7:02/mi — a meaningful step up from the 6:42 pace ahead of him, which opened a gap of over a minute to the podium. The back half of the top 20 packed in tightly, with seven runners between 23:20 and 23:45, including Declan Capagli (7th, 23:20), Jake Perry (8th, 23:31), Kieran Kirkpatrick (9th, 23:42), and Jorge Delgado Jr. (10th, 23:45). And right near the cut of the individually listed finishers, Caleb Mills and Blake Barawed crossed in 24:45 and 24:46 — one second apart after 3.1 miles, which is about as close as it gets without a photo finish.
