Gardner made the M19-24 age group his from the outset, posting a 6:23/mi average that none of his 58 competitors could match. His Sacramento neighbor Ty Brooks gave chase and held strong for 2nd in 20:08 — a respectable 6:29/mi — but the 17-second gap between them tells the real story: Gardner was simply running a different race. Anthony Mendez of Woodland rounded out the podium in 20:42 (6:40/mi), finishing 34 seconds back of the winner.

The real drama in this field played out in the battle for 4th and 5th. Mack Lucas Rapolla, the youngest finisher in the top 20 at 19, crossed 14th in 26:09 — a solid showing for the Vacaville runner in a group dominated by 22- and 24-year-olds.
