There's something to be said for simply showing up — and then actually running 3.1 miles at age 80. Gerry Burney of Ukiah, CA did exactly that at the 2026 Shamrock'n 5K, finishing in 31:37 and claiming the M80+ title outright.

At 10:11 per mile across the full 5K, Burney kept a composed, steady effort through the cool, humid morning air. The 54°F temperature and light 8 mph breeze made for reasonable conditions, and Burney made the most of them, crossing the line as the only — and therefore undisputed — M80+ finisher on the day.
