San Francisco 5K 2025: Swanson dominates the F55-59 field

• Katherine Swanson, 56, wins in 26:30 — an 8:32/mi average that left the field more than a minute behind.

• Places 6–8 finished within one second of each other — Marie Guerrero (35:17), Monica Cooke (35:18), and Iris Hoffman (35:18) in one of the tightest three-way clusters of the day.

On a cool, damp San Francisco morning — 56°F, 95% humidity, and a 14 mph wind off the bay — Katherine Swanson of Sunnyvale ran a commanding wire-to-wire win in 26:30. Her 8:32/mi pace was a full 21 seconds per mile faster than runner-up Lisa Ballantine's 8:53/mi, and it wasn't close: Swanson crossed the line more than a minute ahead in a 35-woman field.

Ballantine, 59, out of Santa Barbara, was a worthy second. Running the strongest race of anyone in the back half of the top ten, she finished in 27:37 — comfortably clear of Elizabeth Hilton's 30:56. Hilton, a San Francisco local, claimed third and held off the rest of the field by a healthy margin; fourth-place Michelle GeoffroyLeu of Spring, TX, came in at 33:09, more than two minutes back.

The race's most entertaining subplot unfolded in the battle for sixth through eighth. Marie Guerrero and Monica Cooke, both from Turlock, CA, finished at 35:17 and 35:18 respectively — and Iris Hoffman of Falls Church, VA, also clocked 35:18, a single second separating all three. Shu-Hsien Huang had crossed just ahead of them at 34:00 to claim fifth, rounding out a tight mid-pack.

Behind the top twenty, fifteen more finishers completed the F55-59 field, testament to the depth of the group on a challenging course. But the headline belonged to Swanson — a clear, confident win in the hills of San Francisco.
