M70-74: Harbans Singh Dominates the Streets of San Francisco

Harbans Singh, 70, from Manteca, CA, made the M70-74 race look like his personal time trial. His 30:35 at a 9:51/mi clip left the field well behind, with second-place Pedro Rodriguez — also 70, from Daly City — crossing in 34:49 (11:12/mi). That's a 4:14 gap, and it wasn't close. Singh was simply in a different gear on the foggy San Francisco streets.

The real drama in this eight-man field played out a few minutes later, where Ravi Rege of San Ramon and Ray Chen from Bothell, WA, ran each other to the wire. Rege held off Chen 40:29 to 40:33 — four seconds after more than 40 minutes of racing — to claim 3rd. It was a genuine battle to the finish line, with Chen running the faster pace of 13:03/mi to Rege's 13:02/mi, a difference so slim it barely registered on the clock.

Tim Jenks of Menlo Park rounded out the top five in 49:06 (15:48/mi), with Bryan Sasaki of Colorado Springs finishing 6th in 52:51 (17:01/mi) and San Francisco's own David Osgood crossing 7th in 55:25 (17:50/mi). Raymond De Guzman of Mission Hills, CA, brought it home in 1:10:56 (22:50/mi) to complete the field of eight — every one of them covering 3.1 miles through San Francisco's signature chill and 14 mph winds at age 70 or older.
