M19 & Under: Shatzko Runs Away from the Field in San Francisco

• Andrew Hislop, age 11, finishes 8th in 24:58 — one of the youngest competitors in a 103-runner field, and well inside the top 10.

Nicholas Shatzko turned a 5K on the foggy San Francisco waterfront into a statement. The 15-year-old from Hayward covered the course at 5:50 per mile — a pace that would have been competitive in the open men's race in prior editions — and crossed in 18:06, the fastest time in the M19 & Under field by a margin that made the race feel like two separate events. Behind him, 19-year-old Bodi Szabo ran a composed 21:00 (6:46/mi) to lock up 2nd, but the gap to Shatzko was never seriously threatened.

The real drama played out in the battle for 3rd through the mid-pack. Patrick Shi (16, San Francisco) took the final podium spot in 22:49, running 7:21/mi, but Yoonwoo Chung (4th, 23:49) and Nicholas Roussos (5th, 24:47) kept the pressure on through the finish. Then came one of the race's more striking clusters: Sawyer Gurries (6th, 24:52) and Lorick Deslandes (7th, 24:52) crossed in the exact same displayed time, with just a sliver of the clock separating them — Gurries edging the placement. Andrew Hislop (8th, 24:58) rounded out that tight group just six seconds further back.

The field also featured some genuinely young talent worth noting. Nathan Steer and Luke Steer — both age 10, both from Saffron Walden — finished 11th (25:27) and 13th (25:45) respectively, running 8:11 and 8:17 per mile in damp, 56°F conditions with a 14 mph wind off the Bay. Oliver Liao (18th, 26:55) and Nixon Castro (19th, 27:04) were also 10 years old and well inside the top 20 of a 103-finisher field. Shatzko's win was decisive, but the depth of young runners behind him made for a genuinely competitive morning.
