F18-20: Mia Brown runs away with it in Napa

In a chilly, breezy Napa morning — 48°F with a 12 mph wind and humidity pushing 80% — three young women toed the line in the F18-20 field of the Napa Valley Marathon 5K. What unfolded was a race with a dominant winner and two finishers who earned every step of it in tough conditions.

Mia Brown, 19, from Napa itself, was in a race of her own. Her 25:46 finish at an 8:18/mi pace left no doubt at the top of the standings — she crossed the line more than eight minutes ahead of second place. That kind of gap in a 5K speaks to how commanding her effort was, whatever the wind and damp air had to say about it.

Emmeline Mata, 20, of Rohnert Park claimed second in 33:46 — a 10:52/mi pace that reflects real work over 3.1 miles in those conditions. Behind her, Napa's own Izzie Malan, just 18 years old, rounded out the field in 37:55 at 12:12/mi. Mata held second by just over four minutes on Malan, a gap that kept the battle for the runner-up spot from being particularly close — but both women finished, and on a cold, windy March morning, that counts for something.
