Martin Stoyanov of Menlo Park set the tone from the gun. His 18:29 at 5:57/mi was a full 1:31 faster than anyone else in the 27-boy field — and at 16, he ran with the composure to match. Right on his heels for most of the race was 14-year-old Jason Rossetter of Lafayette, who answered with an 18:37 of his own. Eight seconds separated them at the line — a genuine chase that made for the sharpest finish of the morning.

The Lafayette contingent was impossible to ignore. Rossetter, D. Kubiatowicz (3rd, 20:13), C. Heintz (4th, 20:43), J. Rehfeld (5th, 21:18), R. Gardiner (6th, 21:52), and R. Peterson (8th, 23:37) all called Lafayette home, forming a de facto club sweep of the top half of the field. Gardiner's 21:52 at age 11 deserves a mention — running 7:02/mi against a field that included 15- and 16-year-olds is no small feat.

Jeffrey Barlow of Yorba Linda slotted in 7th at 22:09, the lone finisher between the Lafayette pack and the broader mid-field. Preston Carter (11th, 26:51) and Ayden Zeyrek (12th, 26:54) finished just three seconds apart — close enough to feel like a race within the race, though Carter held the edge. And at the back of the listed finishers, 9-year-old F. Shaheen of Napa crossed 20th in 39:17, completing a 5K that many adults would find plenty challenging on a cool, breezy Napa morning.
