M40-44 5K: Newman runs away with it in Napa

• Andrew Newman (San Diego, CA) won the M40-44 race in 23:27 at a 7:33/mi pace — nearly two minutes clear of the field.
• Adam Nice took 2nd in 25:16, with William Stigen rounding out the podium in 26:58.
• Places 5 and 6 — Matthew Brendle and Franklin Rinaca, both of Mt Pleasant, SC — finished in the exact same recorded time of 27:39 at 8:54/mi, with Brendle edging Rinaca by the finest of margins.
• Eric Puryear (7th, 27:41) was just two seconds behind that pair, making for a three-man cluster separated by a total of two seconds across 5th through 7th.

Andrew Newman didn't just win the M40-44 race on a cool, breezy Napa morning — he dominated it. His 23:27 at 7:33/mi was a full 1:49 faster than runner-up Adam Nice, a margin that speaks for itself in a 5K. Nice (25:16, 8:08/mi) was solid in his own right, holding a comfortable gap back to 3rd-place William Stigen, who crossed in 26:58 at 8:41/mi. The podium was settled and decisive; the real drama unfolded just behind it.

Nicholas Thomas (4th, 27:27) had a small cushion heading into the finish, but places 5 through 7 were a genuine scrum. Brendle and Rinaca — both representing Mt Pleasant, SC — crossed in identical 27:39s, with Brendle officially ahead by a sliver the clock couldn't fully capture. Puryear (Bettendorf, IA) was right on their heels at 27:41, making that trio one of the tightest bunches of the morning. Christopher Pelton (8th, 28:34) was the last man under 29 minutes, with Robby Bauman (9th, 30:17) and Ryan Brown (10th, 31:48) rounding out the top ten.

The back half of the M40-44 field spread out considerably from there, with times ranging from Dorian Mcnab's 33:44 (11th) through to Gene Manansala's 54:15 (20th) — a reminder that this group brought 21 finishers to the start line with a wide range of goals and paces. But on a 48-degree morning with a stiff 12 mph wind off the valley, everyone who finished earned it. Newman, though, was in a category of one.
