Napa Valley 5K — F65-69: Beno leads wire to wire in a cool, breezy Napa morning

Linda Beno, 67, made the trip from Vancouver, WA worthwhile, crossing in 31:23 at a crisp 10:06/mi to claim the F65-69 title on a cool, breezy Napa morning — 48°F with a 12 mph wind that made every mile feel a touch more honest. Her margin over fellow 67-year-old Janet Sawyer (32:16, 10:23/mi) was 53 seconds — comfortable, but not a runaway. Sawyer's 10:23/mi pace was notably slower than Beno's, and the gap held to the line.

Cindy Barton of Novato, CA — the local contingent representing — secured third in 33:55 (10:55/mi), putting a 1:39 cushion between herself and the podium's edge. Behind the top three, a significant gap opened: Sue Schneider of Hilo, HI crossed 4th in 40:19 (12:59/mi), more than six minutes back of Barton, with Teri Deacon (46:11) and Jenny Wang (49:26) filling 5th and 6th.

The back half of the field told its own story. Linda Snook (56:24) and Laurie Congi (56:48) — both 65, from Santa Cruz and hometown Napa respectively — ran nearly the same race and finished just 24 seconds apart, with Snook edging Congi for 7th. Maureen Heath, 69, of Fairfax, VA finished 9th in 1:02:22, and Sheila Iverson of Austin, TX closed out the ten-woman field in 1:05:26. All ten finishers on the board — that's the whole story.
