M55-59 at Napa Valley Marathon 5K: Silva Runs Away With It

• Jesús Silva Jr. wins in 21:53 — a 7:03/mi clip that put nearly three minutes between him and the rest of the M55-59 field.

Jesús Silva Jr., 58, from just down the road in Yountville, made the M55-59 race his own from the start. His 21:53 finish at 7:03 per mile was a commanding performance in cool, breezy Napa conditions — 48°F and a 12 mph wind that made every minute earned feel real. The gap between Silva and 2nd-place Bill Lewis of Berkeley was 2:55, a margin that tells you this one was never in doubt at the front.

Lewis, also 58, was the clear class of the rest of the field, running 24:48 at 7:59/mi to claim 2nd and separate himself from the pack. Behind him, Novato's Edgar Mendoza (55) and Fremont's Zhonghua Wu (59) waged the race's most competitive duel — Mendoza crossing 3rd in 28:10 and Wu following in 29:01, just 51 seconds back. At 9:04 and 9:20 per mile respectively, that was a genuine fight for the final podium spot.

Ronald Sangalang (55, Pittsburg) rounded out the top five in 32:47 at 10:33/mi, while the back half of the field spread out considerably. Valerio Rocha (55, Novato) finished 6th in 44:53, Ronald Magcauas (55, American Canyon) came home 7th in 55:21, and Joseph Mojares (56, Vallejo) completed the course in 1:06:04 — every one of them earning their finish on a chilly March morning in Napa Valley.
