Masters Women 5K: Lateiner dominates a deep Napa field

The 47-year-old from Lafayette ran a 7:43/mi pace through a cool, breezy Napa morning to cross in 23:59 — the only finisher in the Masters Women field to break 24 minutes. Her margin of victory was 1:35 over Beth Gilmore, whose 25:34 (8:14/mi) was a strong second-place effort in its own right. Jennifer Wilson of Long Lake, MN rounded out the podium in 25:46, just 12 seconds behind Gilmore — making the battle for silver and bronze the sharpest of the top three.

The race got genuinely competitive from 4th place onward. Dominique Monie (26:10), Tunisia Frederick (26:19), and Andrea Wong (26:21) were locked in a tight three-way chase — just 11 seconds spanning those three spots — before Elyse Weng and Grace Murphy extended the pack through 7th and 8th. Both Weng and Wong are locals from Napa itself, racing essentially in their backyard.

Farther back, the 10th-11th battle between Katie Douglas and Kimberley Darling produced the most dramatic finish of the afternoon — identical displayed times of 27:55, with Douglas edging Darling by a whisker for 10th. And then there was Courtenay Mize: the 56-year-old from Park City finished 13th in 28:25, ahead of athletes more than a decade younger, a quiet standout in a field of 182 Masters Women who braved the 48-degree, wind-swept Napa morning.
