Merchant ran a composed, wire-to-wire race on a mild mid-March morning in Virginia Beach — 62°F with a light breeze and manageable humidity. Her 6:50/mi average was the class of the F40-44 field, and her 8th-place standing among all women confirmed she wasn't just winning her age group; she was racing the entire women's field. The 2M–4M segment told the same story: eighth-fastest in the women's race, right alongside Farley at tenth.

Farley made it a genuine two-woman contest at the front. The 25-second gap at the finish is real separation over 8 kilometers, but Farley's 6:55/mi pace kept her comfortably clear of the rest of the field and showed she was racing Merchant, not just the clock.
