He was never seriously challenged.

Antoine Fitzgerald (Ashland, VA) and Marshall Tucker (Richmond, VA) ran the next two spots cleanly, clocking 29:55 and 30:19 respectively. Fitzgerald's 6:01 pace held off Tucker's 6:06 for the full distance, and the 24-second gap between them was comfortable enough that neither man needed a dramatic late move to secure his podium spot.

The most compelling moment in the top ten came at 4th and 5th. Jason Wahr (Virginia Beach) and Michael Wolfe (Glen Allen) both finished in 30:51 — identical to the second. Wolfe actually posted the 29th-fastest men's split on the 2M-to-4M stretch while Wahr logged the 30th, meaning Wolfe was the stronger runner through that middle segment. But the timing chip gave Wahr 4th at the finish line, so Wolfe had to settle for 5th despite that mid-race edge.

Michael Soberick (6th, 31:16) and Andrew Yearsley (7th, 31:58) rounded out a strong top seven, while Carter Eggleston and Chris Morrisette — both 44 years old — crossed back-to-back in 8th and 9th just a second apart (32:37 and 32:38).
