M20-24 at the Shamrock 8K: Duval Dominates Virginia Beach's Young Men

• Zach Duval won the M20-24 group in 26:12 (5:16/mi), holding 4th among men throughout and posting the 4th-fastest men's split on the 2M→4M segment.
• Draven Fernandez was 24 seconds back in 2nd at 26:36, with Konnor Rafferty another 1:08 behind in 3rd at 27:44.
• James Johnson (4th, 27:59) and Connor Bryan (5th, 29:19) rounded out the top five — a 1:20 gap separating them.
• Christopher Applewhite and Peter Hemphill both clocked 35:19 for 13th and 14th respectively, with timing breaking what looks like an identical finish.

Zach Duval set the tone for the M20-24 field from the start, running a composed 5:16-per-mile pace across the 8K course in Virginia Beach. His 26:12 finish was never seriously threatened — Fernandez, the only other runner to break 27 minutes, trailed by 24 seconds and couldn't close the gap through the back half of the race. In a 128-man field of young runners, Duval's lead was decisive.

Behind the top two, the race got more interesting. Rafferty's 27:44 locked up the podium, but just 15 seconds separated him from Johnson in 4th — the tightest gap of the top five. Bryan in 5th crossed at 29:19, a full 1:20 behind Johnson, effectively sealing the podium battle well before the finish line.

Further back, June Richardson (6th, 29:42) and James Creelman (7th, 30:45) led a middle pack that spread out considerably as the field settled into its natural order. The Creelman name appeared twice in the results — James (7th, 30:45) and Andrew (11th, 33:55) — a 3:10 gap between the two Yorktown runners. At 13th and 14th, Applewhite and Hemphill were separated by only the finest of margins at 35:19 apiece, with timing giving Applewhite the edge.
