Her margin over Karen Franke was 11 minutes and 15 seconds, which is less a gap than a statement. There was no drama at the front; Bone's 542nd-place split among all women on the middle stretch tells you she was running at a genuinely different gear from the rest of the F70-74 field.

Behind her, the race for the podium was far tighter. Franke (Chapel Hill, NC) came in at 59:17, with Midlothian's Terry Miffleton — the oldest of the top three at 74 — just 1:31 back at 1:00:48. Miffleton's performance deserves a nod: running 12:14/mi at age 74 on a mild but humid March morning in Virginia Beach is no small thing.

The battle for 4th through 10th was where the real racing happened. Alice Finnell (1:02:49), Karen Clister (1:03:30), Valerie Seiberlich (1:03:49), Donna Looney (1:05:34), Liz Burns (1:05:53), Jane Brown (1:06:21), and Judith Kaplowitz (1:06:31) were packed into a three-and-a-half-minute window — seven athletes, seven distinct finishing spots, one very competitive stretch of the F70-74 leaderboard.

With 52 finishers in all, the F70-74 age group was a full and lively field. Bone won it decisively, but the depth behind her made for compelling racing from 2nd place all the way down the results sheet.
