Shamrock'n 10K M40-44: Ruspil Runs Away with It

• Mathew Ruspil wins the M40-44 group in 35:49 (5:46/mi), finishing 30 seconds clear of runner-up Aaron James.
• Aaron James (36:19, 5:51/mi) holds second comfortably; Danny Abell rounds out the podium in 40:03 — more than three and a half minutes back.
• Abell was the strongest closer in the top three, posting the 8th-fastest second-half split among the men and moving from 13th to 10th in the men's field over the back half.
• Kent Ellis (49:26) and Kenrick Hartman (49:23) finished within three seconds of each other for 9th and 10th — Hartman edging Ellis by the narrower margin.

Mathew Ruspil set the tone early and never let up. The 42-year-old from Reno crossed in 35:49 at a 5:46/mi clip — a pace that held up all the way to the finish line and earned him the 3rd-fastest second-half split among the men. His lead over Aaron James was decisive at 30 seconds, and there was no drama at the front: Ruspil sat 4th in the men's field at the midpoint and was still 4th at the finish, meaning he ran a clean, consistent race with no position swings needed.

James, also 42 and racing out of Sacramento, was equally steady — 5th in the men's field at the halfway mark and 5th at the end, posting the 4th-fastest second-half split among the men at 5:51/mi average. The gap between first and second was a comfortable 30 seconds; the gap between second and third was a chasm. Danny Abell (40:03) was the only other man to crack 41 minutes, and he made his move in the second half, climbing from 13th to 10th in the men's field with the 8th-fastest closing split among the men — the most aggressive surge in the top three.

From fourth onward, Collin Turk (41:40, 6:42/mi) and Ryan Nelson (44:27, 7:09/mi) filled out the top five, with Nelson also moving up a pair of spots in the men's field over the second half. Aaron Ramos (45:12) rounded out the top six before a cluster of finishers in the 48–50 minute range — Hutchison (48:44), Larrabee (49:11), Hartman (49:23), and Ellis (49:26) — made for some of the tightest racing of the day in the M40-44 group. All 83 finishers made it home on a clear, mild Sacramento morning.
