Shamrock'n 10K M50-54: Lao Sue Thao Claims the Age Group Crown

• Lao Sue Thao won the M50-54 age group in 47:15 (7:36/mi), finishing nearly a minute clear of runner-up Amir Cackovic.
• Amir Cackovic (48:14) and Angel Verdugo (48:50) rounded out the podium, separated by just 36 seconds.
• Angel Verdugo made the most dramatic second-half move on the podium, climbing from 73rd to 56th among men on the 5K→Finish segment with the 48th-fastest split on that stretch.
• The M50-54 field stretched deep, with 43 finishers ranging from Thao's 7:36/mi down through Donald Watts' 1:03:31 in 20th place.

Lao Sue Thao set the tone from the gun, and the second half of the race only confirmed it. While Thao slipped two spots among men on the 5K-to-Finish leg, the 47:15 total was untouchable in the M50-54 group — a 7:36/mi effort on a cool, clear Sacramento morning that no one in the age group could answer.

Behind him, the battle for second and third was a genuine back-half story. Cackovic came home in 48:14, climbing four spots among men over the final 5K with the 52nd-fastest split on that segment. But it was Verdugo who ran the most aggressive second half of the three podium finishers — surging from 73rd to 56th among men and posting the 48th-fastest 5K-to-Finish split in the field to lock up third in 48:50. He ran that closing stretch faster than both Cackovic and Thao, making up real ground, but Cackovic's earlier cushion held for the silver.

Timothy Angello (50:17) and Joel Germono (51:57) filled out the top five, with Germono also moving up strongly in the second half — climbing from 109th to 96th among men. From there, the field spread across a wide range of efforts, with Robbie Her (52:48) through Donald Watts (1:03:31) accounting for places six through twenty and another 23 finishers beyond that rounding out a competitive M50-54 group on St. Patrick's Day weekend in West Sacramento.
