Mike Keck, 60, from South Lake Tahoe, set the standard for the M60-64 group on a crisp, clear Sacramento morning. His 44:20 at 7:08/mi was a cut above the field, and he backed it up on the back half — posting the 27th-fastest split among men on the 5K-to-finish leg while moving through the men's field. Tony Hills of Fairfield ran a strong 45:00 (7:15/mi) to claim second, also gaining ground in the final 5K with the 24th-fastest men's split on that stretch. Both men were running at a pace that most of the 28-man M60-64 field couldn't approach.

Behind the top two, a genuine battle unfolded for third. Mark Mcclenahan (Sunnyvale) held off Christopher Terrill (Fair Oaks) by 1:12, finishing in 52:03 to Terrill's 53:15. Then came Peter Cooper, who made the most dramatic second-half surge of anyone in the group — climbing 38 spots among men between the halfway mark and the finish, reaching 5th in M60-64 at 53:50.

The race's most striking footnote came deep in the standings: Jay Templeton and Steve Donaldson, both from the Sacramento area, crossed the line in 1:11:02 — separated by just three hundredths of a second after over 71 minutes of running. The timing system gave Templeton 15th and Donaldson 16th, a margin so fine it's almost philosophical. Twenty-eight men finished the M60-64 race in total, ranging from Keck's 44:20 down to the back of the pack — a full 28-deep field of sixty-somethings getting after it on St. Patrick's weekend.
