Ronald Kellum of Hampton, VA, took the top spot in the M80-99 group, covering the course in 57:47 at an 11:37/mi clip — the only finisher in the group to break the one-hour mark, and he did it by more than five and a half minutes.

Cyrus Rhode Jr. of Spencer, TN ran a steady 12:49/mi to claim second in 1:03:44, with Tommy Welch of College Station, TX close enough in spirit if not in time, finishing third in 1:06:32. At 82, Welch was actually a year older than Rhode, making his bronze-medal run a quiet statement. Fourth went to Harry Shock, 83 — the oldest finisher in the group — who crossed in 1:14:10 at 14:55/mi. Shock's hometown of Virginia Beach meant he knew exactly what he was running into: 62°F with a 9 mph wind and thick humidity at 76%.

Tom Walsh, also 82 and from nearby Norfolk, came in fifth at 1:18:06, followed by Robby Harris of Annapolis in 1:27:02. Stephen Bilenky, another Virginia Beach local, brought it home seventh in 1:40:56 — nearly 43 minutes behind Kellum, but moving under his own power on a March morning that had no business being easy for anyone, let alone a field where the youngest man was 80.
